I had to do this when I registered my 55' which had a mainland registration.
I hooked up my tow bar and took my 55' to the DMV when I did my registration. The lady came out and looked at the vin # and in we went to complete the registration and transfering process.
Drove the car that day, legally.
Hope this helps.

Permalink Reply by Spencer ~ DGS Racing ~ on February 6, 2012 at 8:01pm I took my 55' to the Kapolei DMV fully loaded.
Polish centerlines, raised trans, 2165 race motor with the 48's hanging out the back hood, and nothing but attitude in the car. See the attached pic. This is how the car looked when I took it to the DMV.
The lady came out, said wow nice car. Checked the vin number and walked back to the counter.

You can call the DMV motor control division and ask them about the door handle. It will be the wise choice to register your vehicle as a street rod. As long as a vehicle 1967 and below, you can do this. The requirements are: 1-Hydraulic service brakes on all 4 wheels. 2- Sealed beam or Halogen Headlights. 3- Turn signals and a turn signaling switch. 4- Safety glass or lexan windshield. 5-Electric or vacuum windshield wiper located in front of driver. 6- Standard D.O.T. tailights. 7- Parking brake that operates 2 wheels on same axle ( E- Brake). 8- Seat Belts. It looks like you might have a problem with your wipers. First thing you do is go get your car weighed by a certified scale and get their scalemasters certificate. Next go to the sattelite city hall, and tell them you want to register your vehicle a special interest street rod. They will fax your information to motor vehicle control. They will in turn contact you to setup a appointment. Call 733-2542 and ask for Byron.

Permalink Reply by tom jones on February 9, 2012 at 8:38pm ...but, you still have to have a manual way to open the door from the outside (for safety reasons) or it won't pass.
